In a crisis, small practical jobs come up all the time. You may need to open a can, cut a cord, tighten a screw, fix a strap or bend a wire. A multitool puts a basic toolbox in your pocket.

This one is built around a pair of pliers, with a knife, saw, screwdrivers and openers folded into the handles. The main tools lock open, so they don’t close on your fingers while you work.

It is not a replacement for a full toolbox, but it covers most small jobs and goes wherever you go.

Why it’s in the kit

When you leave home quickly, you can’t bring a toolbox. A single multitool lets you make repairs, open food and prepare shelter. It is one of the items you will use most, even in everyday life.

Storage & maintenance

Keep it dry and clean. Wipe it after use, especially after contact with food or salt water. Put a drop of light oil on the joints now and then. Sharpen the blade when it gets dull.

How to use it

  1. Open the pliers

Swing the handles apart until the pliers lock into place.

  2. Choose the tool

Close the pliers and fold out the tool you need from inside the handles.

  3. Lock before use

Check that the blade or tool has locked before you put pressure on it.

  4. Cut away from you

Always cut away from your body and hands. Keep your fingers behind the blade.

  5. Close it safely

Release the lock, keep your fingers clear of the edge and fold the tool back in.
